Three Alley Pub Itaewon

Three Alley Pub Itaewon

I've heard a lot about Three Alley Pub, so my wife and I stopped in tonight. The place was smokey and the chairs were uncomfortable. What do I expect from a pub? I was just hoping to get some decent pub food. I got an OB (yeah, I know, but I'm cheap) and my wife got a Long Island Ice Tea. The OB was great, but the LIT tasted like sewage. A blind monkey could have poured better. LITs are easy to make. I don't know how they messed that up.

We with the drink in hand, we decided it was best to order one entree and see how they did. We got the Beef and Guinness Stew. It was pretty good, but pretty obvious that the sauce from either from a can or mix and the potatoes and meat were added later. The bread served with it was really good. Actually, the bread made the meal. We decided not to risk another order, so we hit some street food and Cold Stone on the way home.

  1. I agree with your assessment of Three Alley Pub -- a huge disappointment. My drink was so watered down, I had to conclude they were trying to boost profits by ripping off their customers. A Korean friend has his credit card rejected, which is illegal in Korea, then the coup de grace was my very good friends from Uganda (East Africa) were thrown out because the racist owner doesnt like "drug dealing Nigerians". I will never go there again, and would advise against anybody patronizing that crappy place. Don

  2. Hi Don,

Sorry to hear that you had such poor experiences there. It's certainly not my kind of place, but I would say that my experience was more hit or miss.

It really reminded me of the cheap bars in college: smokey, dirty, beat-up tables and chairs, and sub-par food/drinks.

However, I used to really like those kind of places, so maybe it appeals to a different crowd. None-the-less, not a place for me.

  3. The owner seems like a real jerk. They got our order wrong - French Fries instead of Fish and Chips. We understood cuz it was the waitresses first night, and told her to just bring the Fish separately and all would be good. Instead, they told us the kitchen was closed and we'd have to pay for the fries b/c we had already started eating them - no apology, no sense of we 'messed up'; just an attitude like we were trying to get some free Fries out of the deal. Later, we tried to order more food but the kitchen was closed for snacks (snacks end later than food). Since we had been drinking beer (at least 5 or 6 pitchers up til then), we asked if we could have some peanuts which the waitress brought. At the end of the night we were surprised because we had been charged 3,000W per plate (who knew you had to buy peanuts when drinking beer at a bar?). Again, the attitude wasn't "Sorry, maybe that should have been mentioned", it was more like - Well, you got to pay for it cuz you ate them! When we asked to see the manager, the owner comes over and drops an F-bomb right out of the gate, as in "So I hear you don't want to pay for my F-in food.." At that point, we realized, this place cares little about anything other than squeezing every dime they can from it's customers. We didn't expect anything free, but maybe just an ounce of courtesy or respect and we would have paid the bill and left there happily (over 150,000 W). Anyways, we had planned to make our meeting there a regular thing, but we'll save our money for a place that is actually concerned about customer satisfaction.

  4. Since going there last time, I have heard both good and bad things about it. Again, kind of like those old, college bars, some people love it and some hate it. I must depend a lot on when you're there, who you are there with, who you know there (big difference), who is waiting on you.

Like I said in the post, I didn't really eat too much there. The stew was ok and the bread really good. The drinks drove me away.

As for the peanuts...it's something you learn pretty quick in Korea and most people learn it just like you did. The only snack that comes free are those popped rice snacks, which really go well with Korean beer :)
